This final part in Lusine's triptych marks a journey that began way back yonder in 2003 with 'Push', before 2005 birthed 'Inside/Out' and we finally get our hands now on 'Emerald'. The kind of 12" that the lexical nugget "visceral" was minted for, 'Emerald' is a crinkled take on electro that flirts coyly with pop cut-ups and soapy electronica with a sound that is both epic and tightly controlled. Kicking off the A with 'Near Sight', Lusine (aka Jeff McIlwain) blasts the lower end with some dubby shenanigans that are matched up top by slinky melodies and spindly beats, before 'Weaver' takes over with a fresh batch of scalpel sliced vocals that could happily exist in the chalk-blushed electronic pop world. Marking a new direction for Lusine, it proves just how versatile an artist he is and provides a tantalising nod as to where he's going... Elsewhere, the title track is full of layered kick-drums that coalesce into a towering finale, whilst 'Rubberbands' is like an electronic boulder wrapped in a nice and silky analogue sheet.A1 Near Sight
