Martyn continues the wholesale switch to House and broken beat with ace 3rd album, 'The Air Between Words' for Ninja Tune. The D&B, techno and dubstep influences are now bound tighter into his inimitably slinky, driving arrangements, compared with the diversity of debut album 'Great Lengths' (2009) and the darker 'Ghost People' (2011) for Brainfeeder. 'The Air Between Words' feels fluid and organic, flowing naturally from piece to piece with an effortlessness that's become Martyn's signature. Ten tracks are sequenced sweetly from the field recorded textures and warm chords of 'Forgiveness Step 1' thru the heavy house heft of closer 'Fashion Skater', taking in the dusted garage swing of 'Glassbeadgame' with Four Tet and the curious balance of Inga Copeland's sweetened vocal and brooding, distorted Reese bass on 'Love of Pleasure', beside the clipped rudeboy roll of 'Forgiveness Step 2' and the low-slung digital dream bump of 'Lullaby'.
