Description

In a nod to the Jamaican-style sound clashes of old, the acts Prince Fatty and Mungo’s Hi Fi have remixed each other’s songs on the aptly titled “Prince Fatty vs. Mungo’s Hi Fi.” This 7" features Prince Fatty’s remix of “Scrub a Dub Style", with the original on the flip.

Mungo’s Hi Fi is a Scottish soundsystem collective patterned on the Jamaican versions of the 1950s and ’60s, when DJs in Kingston would build the biggest, most powerful PA they could assemble and use it to host street parties—a direct influence on the birth of hip-hop in New York in the 1970s—or compete against other soundsystems in what were known as sound clashes. Mungo’s Hi Fi released “Scrub a Dub Style,” featuring the veteran (and now deceased) reggae singer Sugar Minott, on their 2011 album “Forward Ever.”

Prince Fatty is the performance moniker of producer Mike Pelanconi, who has worked with Lily Allen, Blur’s Graham Coxon and reggae singer Gregory Isaacs, among others. Pelanconi remixed “Scrub a Dub Style,” pumping up the bass and adding vocals by the reggae MC Horseman, a frequent collaborator.
