Carlos Niño is a Los Angeles-based producer, composer, ensemble orchestrator, Dublab Labrat, and mentor. He is also DJ of the influential KPFK radio show, Spaceways Radio, a program dating back to 1995 that has hosted guests like A Tribe Called Quest, J. Dilla, Gil Scott-Heron, Afrika Bambaataa, and many others.
Flutes was recorded in California, mostly in the greater Los Angeles area, and demonstrates Niño's signature style of Space Collage Hybrid music. A spiritual, free-form, progressive full-length that touches on jazz, New Age, psychedelic and ambient musics, Flutes sees contributions from artists like Madlib, Kamasi Washington, and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, the latter of whom has recorded & composed for acts like Rihanna, Lana Del Rey, Father John Misty, Flying Lotus, and others.
The music on Flutes spans a few years, leading up to March 2015. Of this, Niño remarks, "I rarely throw anything away, and in this case, a few pieces I'd started and archived were brought back to the forefront as they vibrationally matched with the project.
