Grolar Bears are a unique and ambitious symphonic funk band. They take a different approach from singer-focused neo-soul bands, focusing instead on tightly orchestrated performances and production reminiscent of the work of Quincy Jones and David Axelrod. For their last record, 2012's COS: The Original Motion Picture Score, they created a sweeping soundtrack to a fictitious 70's exploitation film. COS was hailed as one of the best records of the year, with Hymie's Vintage Records saying "It's recorded in an unusual way, with great performances. Cos brings elements of pop, classical, funk and jazz to the table [and] each performer is captured doing what they do best" Their new single "Midnight Stew" is a dramatic strutter, steeped in funk history, backed with an instrumental version on the B-side. It makes one want to walk up a crowded sidewalk, hands in pockets staring straight ahead with an intent gaze and a subtle smile.
