The third installment of the Italian Library Songbook series unveils a rare, previously unreleased instrumental by Italian library legend Giuliano Sorgini, “Awakening (Part I),” featuring his friend and frequent collaborator Alessandro Alessandroni on guitar. In this special Four Flies series, forward-thinking producers, songwriters and vocalists from today’s global scene put their spin on works from masters of Italian golden age film and library music, crafting fresh and groovy vocal tracks.
This time around, it’s the turn of Florence-born producer Clap! Clap! (Cristiano Crisci) and Japanese rapper COMA-CHI to reimagine Sorgini’s piece for contemporary audiences.
Crisci explains: “I’ve been a huge fan of Italian soundtracks since my teens. My initial obsession with Piero Umiliani, as well as compilations like Easy Tempo, led me to discover the vast universe of our film composers. And to me, Giuliano Sorgini is one of the most impactful and inspiring.”
Crisci delved into the original, sampled it, and built a new composition around it. “Right Track” (available on side A), is a boom-bap delicacy featuring lyrics and vocals by Coma-Chi.
“Working on a track by sampling ‘Awakening,’” Crisci continues, “was more than an honor; it was a dream come true. That’s why I wanted to share this experience with Coma-Chi, one of my absolute favorite MCs, who immediately connected with the passion behind these sounds and wrote the lyrics that made this our ‘Right Track!’”
Originally recorded in 1974 for a nature documentary, Sorgini’s “Awakening (Part I)” finally sees its official release, over half a century later, on side B of this 7-inch single. The instrumental perfectly encapsulates the maestro’s signature dark-funk style. Drums, synths, and Alessandroni’s 12-string acoustic guitar interweave in a minimalist yet powerful arrangement.
