Lacking the flamboyance or sexy bedroom shaking baritone voices of Issac Hayes or Barry White, David Porter (actually the other half of the Hayes/Porter Memphis Shoals songwriting hit team of the '60s) manages to pull off an interesting concept album. Porter's dramatic rendition of THE MASQUERADE IS OVER is definitely is a strong point and worth the price of the album alone - it's soulful, but if you haven't heard it before its probably very different than anything you've ever heard... part Issac Hayes/Barry White orchestral soul, part like something out of the climax to a modern broadway/rock musical... at the time, maybe only the Beatles were flirting with such orchestral complexity. There's that rap/dialogue with that break beat you've heard before, and the weird and soulful part disco, part movie soundtrack type ending - a tune definitely well ahead of its time and classic moment in soul music.
