GRANDMASTER MASESE is a poet / writer / actor / teacher / musician from Nairobi, Kenya. He plays the Obokano, an eight stringed lyre of the Gusii people of Western Kenya. The instrument is notable not only for its giant size, but also for it's distinctive otherwordly bass heavy buzzing sound. Masese is among just a handful of remaining Obokano players and one of the few visible young players in the entire world. Masese breaks boundaries of current African music by fusing new and traditional sounds. A true "urban griot," Masese takes his giant instrument wherever he goes and will play it for anyone interested. Dagoretti is proud to bring Masese's music to international audiences and even more proud to commit this music to vinyl. This is likely the first vinyl release of exclusively Obokano music from Kenya in more than 50 years.
