Heavy new 12" here from Manchester's very own Illum Sphere, who's only gone and landed on the XL-affiliated Young Turks label. `Birthday' sets things off right with the kind of echoing gaseous noise you'd more rightly find on a Miasmah LP, but quickly morphs into a post-Roule filtered-to-f*ck house banger. Admittedly this isn't gonna be heard on Top of the Pops any time soon, but take a listen and you'll know what we're on about - it's house fired off through Burial's patented rainy urban moonscapes. `h808er' over on the flipside could hardly be more different as it knocks down the dense shakes of `Birthday' in favour of skeletal Roland-led electro. This one's where Illum Sphere really comes into his own for our money, and nudges at the kind of gold he likely has in store for his upcoming full length.
