On this latest self-titled jaunt, ex Super Collider man Jamie Lidell takes his slick neo funk into another place entirely, aiming somehow for a post-punk/funk variant that actually fits well. It's a far cry from his last slew of releases, but this blend of crushed electronics and Prince-esque sheen is one that mirrors Lidell's confidence and charisma appropriately. Coming across like a big, brash older brother to Toro Y Moi's delicate and comparatively shy `Anything in Return', `Jamie Lidell' is the love letter to Parliament/Funkadelic The Talking Heads never made. It might not have much in the way of restraint, but Lidell's always been happy to let his voice shine over everything, and this time around the production supports that with aplomb.
