2017 15th Anniversary remastered reissue on triple vinyl, with download card - In the late 90s, Brooklynites Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani recalibrated their techno-orientated production styles and began trying to create music filled with the spirit of 70s and 80s NYC disco. Fast forward to the end of the 2000s and their eponymous debut LP finished second only to Ricardo Villalobos’s Alcachofa in Resident Advisor’s ‘Top 100 Albums of the 2000s’ poll. Initially dropped in 2002, Environs have now re-pressed the album to coincide with its 15th birthday. The duo’s spare drum takes, thick basslines and spiky percussion places their music in the fine tradition of New York groovemeisters - from ESG and Liquid Liquid to The Rapture, DFA Records and Hercules & Love Affair. These guys tried to replicate the stranger extended dub versions of classic New York club tunes, and their intuitive, slightly wonky groove experiments came out just right. You really can’t claim to know your electronic music culture without having this on your radar: this 2002 stunner was and remains hugely significant.
