yellow vinyl version - If you are a past fan of Mick, but haven’t been keeping up with him for a while then this is the right LP to jump back in with. Because these days it does feel like his audience pretty much nosedived after he failed to meet expectations with The Healing Component. Mick is a better emcee than ever here, and it’s clear the last two years he’s really been honing his craft, and is trying to carve a more niche sound for himself with this one. Not that he didn’t try with Pieces of a Man as well, but this finds his most efficient blend of headiness and more accessible sounds. Punchy and intelligent bars, the most accessible jazz rap production I have personally liked and cared for since TPAB, a short and concise run time, manic but also sharply calculated cool performances from Mick when needed, and almost even a new character he’s playing here with the voice at times. All of this makes The Patience the most exciting Mick Jenkins project since his breakout classic The Water[s]. One of the best album experiences of the year is a refreshing, compact and engaging listen, that could use a little polishing in the middle, yet makes me as animated as Mick is, to see what is next for one of Chicago’s brightest minds in hip hop.
