Serving as a reminder of just how great last year's Skeletal Lamping album was, this new EP reintroduces you to the delights of the truly wonderful 'An Eluardian Instance' and 'Gallery Piece', both of which have been reinterpreted and refined by super-producer Jon Brion, who's previously worked with all sorts of artists, from Elliott Smith to Kanye West. He's also worked on some very notable film soundtracks like Magnolia and I Heart Huckabees, cementing his reputation as a musical polymath and all-round mixing board genius. Brion makes a bonafide pop masterpiece from 'An Eluardian Instance' (here renamed as 'First Time High') - it's one of those rare songs that succeeds as a visceral, instantaneous thrill as much as it does for its intricate instrumental configuration and lyrical merits - it's darn near perfect. An acoustic version dissects the song and cements its greatness. The comparably ace, yet wholly more lascivious 'Gallery Piece' comes in three different versions: a regular four-minute radio-compatible mix, an extended version harbouring some inspired disco-flavoured production tweaks, and an instrumental. So, so good...
