Under the directorial supervision of Quinn Harris, The Masterminds romp through a host of soul/funk permutations on this 1970 LP, here reissued on CD with bonus tracks in the form of 7" versions of key tracks 'Stop! Telling Me Lies' and 'We Got To Get Together'. In addition to the musicians of The Masterminds themselves, Harris plays sax, flute, piano and organ on the recordings, weaving a lightly jazzy element into proceedings. Some pieces benefit from a vocal presence, most notably the almost operatic, soaring tones of Lady Bianca, which are especially essential to those 7" tracks. The music gets a bit more tangled up and messy on the title track, with the band's tight, authoritative rhythm only just stopping the production from collapsing into all-out free music mania. An interesting hybrid of styles within the grey areas that lie between jazz, funk and soul.A1 Stop!
