Seun Kuti and Sampa The Great have collaborated on a Zamrock remix of “Emi Aluta,” a standout track from Seun Kuti & Egypt 80‘s latest album, Heavier Yet (Lays The Crownless Head). The remix is available as a limited edition transparent 7” vinyl, with only 700 copies worldwide. The B-side will feature a 45 edit of the original track. Rooted in Kuti’s signature afrobeat style, Emi Aluta carries a strong political message, reflecting his commitment to social justice.
The remix fuses Kuti’s signature afrobeat sound and the political message of ‘Emi Aluta’ with elements of Zamrock, a style that emerged in Zambia during the 1970s blending traditional Southern African rhythms with psychedelia, funk, and rock. Sampa The Great, born in Zambia’s Copperbelt region, adds an urban R&B and urban flavour, enhancing the track’s energy. Kuti, who praises Sampa as “one of the best and most innovative lyricists of our time,” creates a vibrant fusion of styles with the remix, offering a fresh perspective on the original.
Pioneered by bands like WITCH and Paul Ngozi, Zamrock combines funk, rock, and traditional Zambian music. Known for its heavy guitar riffs and socially conscious themes, Zamrock emerged post-independence, reflecting the era’s cultural and political shifts. Sampa The Great’s connection to her Zambian heritage brings authenticity to the remix, honouring the style’s legacy.
