A thrilling debut EP from Morr Music debutants Surf City. The New Zealand band occupy a musical terrain hitherto largely untouched by the Berlin label, sounding like an early sixties surf rock band filtered through a modern indie rock sound inspired by American indie heroes from The Pixies to modern day acts like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Tapes 'N' Tapes, The Shins - and perhaps there's even a smidge of Deerhunter in there too, particularly when it comes to the echo chamber, wall-of-sound dynamics of 'Canned Food'. The production plays a big part in the success and energetic aesthetics of the band, adding a reverberant warmth to their tightly harmonised vocals and serrated guitar jangle. The EP is perfectly proportioned as an introductory calling card, filled with lean two-to-three minute pop gems with not an ounce of fat to be found anywhere; from the Dick Dale twang of introductory number 'Headin' Inside' right through to the comparatively epic closer 'Free The City', nothing goes astray.
