An artist rumoured to be Falty DL flexes his Braindance muscle as Tenant with six skilful tributes to AFX’s pivotal Hangable Auto Bulb series.
Where AFX’s original series marked out new zones of mutant, hyper techno between jungle, electro-jazz and classical composition, Tenant nimbly treads similar lines, but with a warmer vibe and more analogue dust in the cracks. We’re not 100% sure, but it sounds like Remote Lover kicks off with a chord from Vangelis’s Bladerunner soundtrack, before vaulting into a bubbly-but-breakneck lushness with rapid-fire rhythms skating into clattering jazz breaks on Run Run Devices and the spindly, hyaline chamber piece Unison Yellow. He steps right on the gas with Lunar Gymnast’s anti-G breakbeat feats, and touches on that AFXian melancholy with Mr Nu Wasteland, with Undreamt Lawns sounding closer to recent Venetian Snares.
