Description

Who could have predicted that an accidental MP3 upload would birth a phenomenon? Never having met in person, but electronically connected through common musical friends, producer Grahm Zilla and Nigerian-born rapper / vocalist Isis began Thunderheist to throw a wrench into static hip hop conventions and explore their love for the dancefloor. After touring steadily throughout North America and Europe for over two years and hunkering down in the studio for a good chunk of '08, "Toronto's sh*t-hot electro duo" (NME.com) drops the hotly anticipated Thunderheist. The chaotic energy of their early recordings and live shows is honed to a unique narrative of contemporary music that draws on established musical genres while venturing into uncharted territory. Thunderheist is far more than an electrorap act; grounded in hip hop, booty bass, and electro, they are also deeply in love with disco, pop, and R&B. With this arsenal of influences and hooks, the pair crafts a new definition of future pop music.
Sinuous swagger seeps from Zilla's ominous basslines. Clutching the mic like a scepter, the African daughter laces each joint with lyrical angel dust, her rich vocal foreplay brimming with braggadocio and sweet melancholic soul. The disco shimmer of "Sweet 16" kicks things off with a message to young ladies enthralled with the seedier side of the nightlife. "Nothing2Step2" is a bonafide electronic pop anthem to which Isis refers as her "Madonna moment," full of lament and strength to carry on. The celebrated "Jerk It" brings in the ferocity with its saw-like synth lines and juke electro bounce enabling call. "Space Cowboy" nods toward Giorgio Moroder with grand cascading synths leading to a glorious disco workout. On the electro-flipped "Do The Right Thing," Isis raps about the runner game, and she's not talking athletics. "Anthem" wraps things up with a disco-fied electropop flourish. Thunderheist is gonna be at this for a good while, and their dreams of shining bright are finally coming true.
