black vinyl version - On his 3rd album proper, Scott Hansen aka Tycho connects greater than ever with his wistful post-rock ambient spirit. 'Awake' is apparently inspired by the energy of Scott's live shows with drummer Rory O'Connor and guitarist Zac Brown, with whom he toured extensively following 2011's well received 'Dive' LP. In an attempt to re-capture that vibe, he took to a cabin in Tahoe last winter to record with Zac Brown, before eventually completing the album in the Santa Cruz hills to realise what, according to Hansen himself, is "in many ways, the first true Tycho record." It's a lush affair, driven towards the horizon by O'Connor's purposeful percussion which mirrors the pulsing patterns of the synthesiser, bass and guitar melodies. The whole thing could be the soundtrack to an American Indie rom-com or an advert for online dating for mountaineers, or at least folk who like to watch epic nature programmes with sweeping panoramic shots. Good stuff..
