Hive1' is the engrossing development of Tyondai Braxton's collaborative work first conceived for live performance in 2013. Sounding out remarkably close to the extreme psychoacoustics of Florian Hecker and modular tangles of Charles Cohen, 'Hive1' 'fesses eight tracks grown from the seeds of Hive's ensemble shows spanning their debut at New York's Guggenheim Museum in 2013 and successive events in The Sydney Opera House and London's Barbican. It's cleanly thwarted our presumptions at the very least, moving light years on from his former role in Battles to encompass a much wider yet focussed set of ideas about pattern and discord, veering from tightly controlled funk infections to brain-flossing electronics and back again. Quite crucially, it feels and sounds *new, and not the same ground retrodden by fresher feet. RIYL Kronos Quartet, Alarm Will Sound, Bang On A Can, Ben Vida.
