Taken from Outernational Meltdown’s 1995 album Free At Last, this sampler is a testament to South Africa’s post apartheid experimentalism. A global collective of musicians joined in Johannesburg and Cape Town to merge African and Latin styles, emerging with eruptions of melodic percussion rattling and trilling with birdsong, and fierce continental fusions of jazz, funk, and folk. Cyclical bass plucks and slanted piano chords back the impassioned growling vocals of ‘Hungry On Arrival’, while Joe Claussell’s edit of ‘Khon’othwele’ is a microcosm of these vibrant, colourful collaborations, with rustling percussion, flurries of guitar, and bright journeying drums.
