Description

Yup, they're back. After a self-imposed hiatus of nearly half this decade given to solo projects and collaborations, one of hiphop's most enduring and outre acts returns with a new album on Big Dada. 'Fluorescent Black' reunites Beans, High Priest, Earl Blaize and M. Sayyid for another visionary set of forward thinking lyrics and electronically enhanced beats, proving over its duration that they still resolutely remain relevant in 2009. To our ears, the beat on 'New Jack Exterminator' sounds a lot like El-P, but is actually just Beans back on form, providing a spiky rhythm to catch the crew's flow, with the only flaw being some unnecessary scratching. 'Shine' is another highlight, sounding like Goblin jamming with Kool Keith, while the ever reliable Priest is at the keys for Kode 9 styled dub-tech-meets-hiphop of 'C Thru U' and E. Blaize gets busy with impressively advanced vocal processing on 'Get Lite'. Elsewhere, Roots Manuva appears on the set's standout dancefloor-friendly shot 'NY to Tokyo' and we're hoping for a single version of the outstanding 'Born Electric'. So, have APC come up with one of the electronic hiphop albums of the year? Quite possibly..
