B Lan 3 is the solo project of Death Comet Crew and Ike Yard's Michael Diekmann, making amazing, fantastical sci-fi/multimedia soundtracks. For Asthmatic Kitty's Library Catalog Music Series he has developed five compositions "...with a focus on the mapping of an imaginary realm... largely inspired by a consideration of a collision between high and low culture; specifically by exploring stylistic conceits from anime and video gaming while drawing upon "high art" examples from literature and cinema." Considering this guy has contributed music (with his Death Comet Crew) to the audio book version of William Gibson's 'Neuromancer' should give an inkling of the cross-cultural/multimedia forces at work here. There's some genuinely arresting moments of abstract drama within, sounding like some mid-'80s Philip Glass vs John Carpenter vs Research fusion, all glassy cyberspace synthesizers, brittle hyperfunk drums and dread echo chamber atmospheres with a sharply attuned sense of simulated fantasy. The label put it best "... how would director Hayao Miyazaki interpret Thomas Pynchon's novel 'Mason & Dixon' as an anime film? Or, what would a single player, RPG video gae of director Andrei Tarkovsky's film 'Andre Rublev' look like?". Highly recommended!
