Heavyweight modern psychedelic Cumbia trips from an outstanding and singular Argentinian producer. Although it's not so prevalent in the UK (aside from maybe El-B sets and the odd Latin club), digital Cumbia - traditional Cumbia folk melodies augmented with up-to-date production - has got hips grinding to a slower beat across the globe. From his base just outside Buenos Aires, Chancha's take on the sound is suffused with a gentle, but captivating and worldly sense of psychedelia, uprooting all kinda inter-connected global sounds and tucking them into wickedly kinky rhythms ranging from feverishly slow motion to heavily layered polyrhythmic killers, but rarely, if ever, going over 100bpm. I suppose it may have something to do with the altitude and short supply of oxygen in Buenos Aires - meaning it's probably dangerous to buss' a sweat to 170bpm jungle at that level! - but once you've acclimatised to his pace, there's some serious specials to be dug in here. Like the whole Chopped & Screwed thing or even Nicolas Jaar and the Drag sound, by slowing down digital sounds from more conventional tempos, Chancha has subtly refocused our perceptions, in the process opening acres of space for your senses to dance wild upstream. Imagine Dilla MPC duelling with DJ Rupture on peyote in the middle of an Andean plateau, and you're somewhere close.
