and woozy return from Emmy Award-winning musician Deru, who released some lovely ambient records on Merck, Mush and Neo Ouija in the '00s. As hinted in the title '1979' is an exercise is hazy nostalgia, using tape saturated synth tones and a keen ear for melodic progression to seduce and regress to seemingly simpler times resonating with the kind of glassy eyed vibes of BoC, Alessandro Cortini, Sand Circles or 1991. The project works around a concept of memory "in its essential, shared nature, incorporating "user submitted entries" of photos and writing from Nigel Godrich (Atoms For Peace, Radiohead), The Gaslamp Killer and Tom Krell, among others, to knit a frayed tapestry of indistinct, murkily recalled emotions and imagery manifest in nine parts seeping between chiming harmonic drifters, gently throbbing basses and wheezing melodies. It'd take a hardened heart to argue that this isn't a really, really sweet album.
