ATOM HEART and BURNT FRIEDMAN may be individually prolific players in their own rights but as electronic duo Flanger, they are arguably one of the leading lights in experimental jazz. Their music is produced by the combination of traditional jazz elements with experimental filtering and editing techniques which has explored elements of future disco (Outer Space/ Inner Space), lounge jazz (On Templates) and Broken beats on 2002's Midnight Sound. It is however on their latest offering, Spirituals, that the duo have decided to explore and relive the notion of "jazz before jazz" with a totally unique but equally traditional group of thirties standards that Burnt Friedman calls "the restoration of a lost sensibility"
