Knowing Flipout’s passion for raw beats and breaks and all things funky come shining through on his first 45 release and it’s a banger. Using the seminal “Nautilus” by Bob James as the foundation, Flip has constructed two songs that not only move the dancefloor but are also an in-depth exercise in placing in historical context the significance in hip-hop of this classic jazz/funk song. Painstakingly recreating almost every usage of this famous sample and pairing them with accompanying vocals in some of the greatest classics in hip-hop. But while there’s an almost academic element of this song in the way that it pays homage to both the songs that used it as well as shining a spotlight on the original masterpiece, let’s recognize that this is a certified banger. This song just MOVES, GROWS, and GOES. HARD.
