Back in stock! Fresh from their awesome Shadow Huntaz session for Skam, the Funcken brothers return to the DUB imprint with a brilliant 4-tracker of warm, dark, intricate midnight electronics. "Smizm" is far less dense and murky than a lot of recent Funckarma material - the production here focusing on a crisp clarity of sound and bass modulation that imbues proceedings with a more cinemascopic feel. "Spunge" offsets the intense beat intricacies with a reactive, almost Detroit-like use of strings, a contrast that works well in building form and structure around melodies that are designed to evoke an intense emotional response. It's a trick that's honed even better on "Fuse" through a seeming discrepancy between the perceived fast tempo and the unusual, hip-hop paced beats. The track seems to operate at two different speeds - both deploying killer variations of the crunch in divine style. "Holdgaze", however, is the standout track - a brilliantly paced slow-burner that shows off its vast array of percussive ingenuity with patience before that unspeakingly sick appregiated acid bassline comes in to wipe away all in its way clean. Those of you crying out for an instrumental version of the Shadow Huntaz album will do well to check this - amazing stuff.
