Description

*2012 Double vinyl edition, includes download code redeemable from the label* Fresh Warp signings Grizzly Bear are another act bound to confound long-time fans of the label, sitting alongside releases by Gravenhurst, Broadcast and possibly Tortoise on the label, but very little else. Yep it's that trendy psychedelic folk that the world's itching to be a part of yet again, but not the kind Devandra and his Bolan worshipping brethren have sought to champion, Grizzly Bear make measured experimental pop music, kind of like Sufjan Stevens thrown into a food blender with a member of Paavoharju and a severed leg of one of the Animal Collective. Brian Wilson tried and succeeded to change pop music way back in the mid 20th century, and somehow he crossed over to the mainstream, this Brooklyn based band are attempting the same kind of genre-defiance and happy-go-lucky poppishness but inject it with a contemporary experimental aesthetic that is thoroughly enticing. Those of you who heard the band's first album 'Horn of Plenty' won't even know what to expect from 'Yellow House', as this record takes off where it's predecessor finished, working in every way to better it and illustrate just how high above their immediate contemporaries this band stand. Even with the opening track 'Easier' you realise that this album is going to be something a little bit special - disguised samples and bubbling loops disappear in the background while half sung songs erupt and dissipate above. Then we reach 'Knife' - a perfect pop moment, nestling itself somewhere between the slightly worrying 50s rock oddness of David Lynch's Mullholland Drive. or Blue Velvet and the Beach Boys 'Good Vibrations'... yes it's very strange, but it's also hugely successful. I have no doubt that 'Yellow House' will polarise listeners, it requires time and effort as all the most rewarding records do, but I implore you to give the band a go, you won't regret it.
