The definitive version of Stax legend William Bell’s 1962 single "Any Other Way" wasn’t cut inside the storied Memphis studio, but rather 1300 miles away in Boston by a transgender pioneer. Recasting the plaintive breakup lament into an anthem of defiance and gay liberation, Jackie Shane rewrote the song without changing a word. Astoundingly, the track wasn’t selected for the A side of the late ’62 release - that would be "Sticks and Stones," a dynamite blast of a policy piece regarding gossips, scolds, and other little people. Following the Grammy-nominated success of our Jackie Shane anthology, Numero is glad to present this essential 45 for DJs and home listeners alike, packaged with a never before seen photo of Ms. Shane herself.
