Description

Visionary percussionist Jon Mueller returns to Type with an absorbing successor to last years critically acclaimed 'The Whole' album. His follow-up was recorded at Steve Albini's legendary Electric Audio facilities and captures the essence of his recent live set; a solo performance for custom built snare drum and amplifier entitled 'I Almost Expected to be Remembered as a Chair'. While the dubbed arrangement of this album isn't an exact replica of that set, it does reflect the philosophy behind it, where Mueller plays against the snare's sharp resonance to create immersive clouds of hypnotic drones which place the listener at the centre of a visceral vortex of sound. On 'Alphabet Of Movements' he plays the piece twice; once for snare, and once for gong. The inherent qualities are markedly different, but both achieve a stunning clarity enhanced by the silo's natural reverb, giving the percussion a deeply human quality which is rendered beautifully by Greg Norman's tape recording. The first piece '...(for snare)' is essentially a tantric martial snare roll building in intensity and density until it becomes a swarming cloud of cacophonous, resonant drone, the immersive, ricocheting effect reminding us somewhat of Ilios' recordings of Pachinko hall released on Pan. His second movement '...(for small gongs)' is a meditation on the instrument's harmonic quality, creating dense, plangent resonance from overlapping overtones and shimmering circular cadence. We think you'll have to agree that there's very little to compare this work to beyond maybe the work of Chris Corsano or C Spencer Yeh, but there's a greater focus, a suspended sense of gratification, which is entirely unique yet timelessly immersive. Recommended.
