Milanese has pioneered the darker side of dubstep, and with his last full length, the gritty 'Extend' he showed just how menacing the genre could sound, crossing low end slowcore with the rasping grind of darkcore junglists Usual Suspects or early Ed Rush and Optical. 'Barry Dub 2007' despite the comedy name is possibly the darkest Milanese track yet, and to my mind the greatest, blending his obvious production skill with the kind of sounds you'd expect to hear in a sci fi or horror b-movie from the 1950s. This ain't easy going, it's the grindhouse of dubstep, all wall-scraping terror and lewd sexual activity with choppy breaks hidden in-between expanses of noise and the lowest bass this side of Tipper. Seriously, there's a mood to 'Barry Dub 2007' that strips it of any generic quality and sets this 12" in a place all of its own, just as close to Sunn O))) or Wolf Eyes as it is to Pinch or Burial, and that's a VERY good thing indeed.
