Description

When metalcore outfit Northlane first came into the scene they started off being relatively unknown outside of Australia. That all changed, however, once people first heard “Quantum Flux” off what would be their sophomore album. After that, the band experienced a surge of popularity. It seemed that their success was going to be short lived though after frontman Adrian Fitipaldes announced he was leaving the band in 2014. Fans were not certain of the Northlane’s future at first, but the group wasted no time in launching a campaign to find their new vocalist. After about a month they found their guy, and shortly after we got to hear the first new song with Marcus Bridge as the frontman. “Rot” was the perfect selection to introduce us to Bridge, and it has ended up being one of the best tracks on their new album, Node. The band’s last album, Singularity, focused on social and political issues, as well as self-awareness. Node does not stray far from those themes. In fact, that is essentially the topic of the entire album. There are so many examples of these topics, you only need to listen to a single track to grasp the concept the band is getting at. A prime example is in the song “Node.” The band is calling for social change, and encourages their fans to be the ones to be the force of change through love and understanding. In the song “Impulse,” Bridge can be heard singing the line “so alone in a digital world” a handful of times. He points out that even though we are more connected than ever before because of the advent of technology and social media, we are still alone because we’re failing to make real, tangible connections with other humans.

Node feels like a natural progression for the band. Sometimes changing out your lead vocalist can set you back, but in this case the change doesn’t seem to be a hindrance whatsoever. The band went through a massive auditioning process to find their new vocalist, and it definitely appears to have been well worth the effort. Bridge has effortlessly stepped in to Fitipaldes’ place and helped the band pick up right where they left off. It’s easy to imagine him singing all of Northlane’s older songs with just as much passion and enthusiasm as Fitipaldes used to. (You don’t even have to imagine it!)

As with the band’s previous album, they have dialed in their spacey, almost dream-like sound just a little bit from before. The song “Weightless” is the best example of this. It’s all clean vocals, the guitars are turned down and have a lightness to them that makes makes them almost seem unreal. The tempo is on the slower side, and gives Bridge the opportunity to show off the range of his clean vocals.

With so many metalcore outfits out there spreading the same old messages and focusing on the same overused themes over and over, it’s quite refreshing to see a band embrace an ideal and push themselves to find creative ways to express it. Northlane found their niche a long time ago, and it’s likely they will continue to push the envelope when it comes to addressing social issues through their music. If you are looking for something melodic, heavy and filled with meaningful lyrics then this is an album you must check out.
