Voodoo Funk reissue of Orlando Julius' criminally overlooked Afrobeat masterpiece. In 1973 Philips originally released this LP, but it didn't really fit their tastes at the time, simply being too egregiously funky when they were after something which would pleasantly bridge highlife and big band music. Obviously, OJ and his band, given their first access to a 24 multi-track at Ginger Baker's legendary ARC studio, had different ideas when it came down to it. Hinging on the incredibly limbre drumming of Akanbi Moses, OJ composed and produced the entire album, deeply inspired by American funk and jazz, but with a definitively Nigerian swagger. Everything here, from the organ-heated tuck and tumble of 'Yio Si Da Miliki Beat' to the jazz-trumpeted 'Afro Instrumental' and the deadly downstroke of 'Kete Kete Koro' is BAD, in the most appropriate sense of the word. Comes with 10"x12" booklet featuring photos of the group and notes from the man himself. Amazing music.
