Alegre repress from an unknown year - Jala Jala y Boogaloo, Ricardo Ray's second album for Alegre, was one of the best of his career, beginning with a splendid opener, "Richie's Jala Jala," with over five minutes of room for solos by dual trumpeters: Venezuela's Pedro Rafael Chaparoo and Doc Cheatham. While the first side concentrates on solid boogaloo and soul crossovers, Ray and Bobby Cruz set the template for salsa on the second with a pair of intense, freewheeling jams: "Lo Atara la Arache" and "Cabo E." Just as dozens of Latin groups were jumping aboard the boogaloo bandwagon, Ray showed that a few English lyrics couldn't compromise the energy level of a great Latin combo.
