This is album number seven in the Ping Pong Orchestra series, which according to the label, finds Shawn Lee soundtracking various locations, be they places he knows well or merely place he'd like to visit. The music on the album finds Shawn throwing together a bit of audio tourism, fashioning and fabricating his own approximations of styles of music he associates with various parts of the world. Consequently, 'Italy 73' sounds a bit like a Giallo soundtrack, Punjabi Lullaby embraces the influence and instrumentation of Eastern exotica, and 'Lagos Calling' dips into Nigerian rhythms. All of this is filtered through Lee's library record style approach, and is ultimately characterised by his own distinctive, retro-production style. Nevertheless the overall David Axelrod-at-KPM feel of the is actually very appealing.
