Limited edition (500) w/gatefold cover. Returning to Sonar Kollektiv under his Soulphiction moniker, Michel Baumann (of Jackmate fame) has readied a new album - a follow-up to 206's State Of Euphoria. Do You Overstand? features an impressive range of production styles, not to mention a detailed grasp on arrangements. From the very beginning, Soulphiction effectively melds elements of live and sampled jazz with a housey blueprint. Longterm collaborator Suzana Rozkosny appears on ace opener 'Chevy Estate', which drones into life with warm brass tones and snippets of strings before eventually embracing a woody 4/4 beat that's reminiscent of certain Farben 12"s. More lavish, orchestral elements seep into 'Ghana Wadada' featuring the production assistance of Phlegmatic, but the sampling gets rougher and less organic as the album continues, making a coarse racket out of the choppy, thudding sounds of 'Velveteens'. This like many of Baumann's productions for the album goes beyond dancefloor functionality and helps instil a sense that this is a proper long-playing record rather than a collection of 12"s. Fear not though 4/4 hounds, the likes of 'Sun Children' and 'Dark Berry' pull off club-style beat manoeuvres with no small amount of style.
