The Brooklyn duo must surely rank as one of synth-pop's more exciting prospects of the moment, arriving at this full-length with a trail of releases that includes the excellent six-track EP This Desert and the more recent Pigeons' single. This is a debut bestowed with strong, instantly memorable pop songs, and just when you wonder whether the band might have already played their best hands (for instance, former EP highlight 'Sleepwalkers' is bravely excluded from the album) you still find yourself encountering track after track of hook-bestowed goodness. In addition to icily cool DFA-style dancefloor bait like 'Dead Ending' you'll find the surprisingly hair-rocking 'Gold Blood', which latches itself to crunching guitars through the verses only to reveal an amazing, out-of-nowhere chorus, or 'Commotion', which almost crosses over into Kylie territory (and not just because the title sounds a bit like 'Locomotion') with its big modern disco sounds. But then the former singles themselves only seem to have grown stronger over time: the thorny new-wave of 'Dressed In Dresden' remains fresh with its jagged-edge guitars and jerking momentum, while the magnificent 'Pigeons' oozes slow-burning chic.
