The Rayvelles are the house band for Echo Ray Studio in London but branched out a couple of years ago with their own self-titled album. It showed they don't need anyone else to complete their sound, and this new two-track 7" on Funk Night is their latest classy blend of soul and funk. 'Smoke Show (feat Marietta Smith)' is utterly unhurried - a groove that is happy to wallow and linger with brass top notes doing the same and an aching vocal infused throughout. On the flip, 'Heavy Hearts (feat Marietta Smith)' is slow and introspective with gentle funk licks and precisely picked strings that bring an innocence to the smoky soul vocals of Smith.
