Description

Limited LP comes in a foil-blocked sleeve with a download from the label. Matmos mastermind Drew Daniel goes there: mixing politics, rave music and black metal cover versions on his first new solo album in a decade. His stall is set quite clearly in the album's title/subtitle 'Why Do The Heathen Rage? Electronic Profanations of Black Metal Classics' and manifest in ten songs contradicting and rubbing off camp house, slavering mentasms, trap beats and gabber shockouts with riffs, chord progressions and lyrics meticulously transcribed from "black metal chestnuts and deep cuts by Darkthrone, Venom, Mayhem, Sarcofago and more". We can hear you ask, "why has nobody thought of this before?". Well, probably because it's completely fxxking ludicrous, but given context in Daniels' hands it's a playfully serious critique and incisive dissection/celebration of sub-cultural tropes, offering gabber version of Venom's foundational 'Black Metal' alongside Ballroom-inspired beat-up of Darkthrone's 'Beholding The Throne Of Might' and a pop house take on Impaled Northern Moonforest's 'Grim and Frostbitten Gay Bar', all questioning how we deal with the aesthetics and often dodgy politics of the black metal genre.
