Description

This is the third volume in our series, dig! !Andale! Records has the uncut stuff straight from the source: tasty Boogaloo from El Barrio. Rarities, favorites, b-sides, unreleased gems, & more from the Speed and Ghetto labels. Whatever bag you're I, from New-yo- Rican shing-a-ling beats & funky Latin Soul breaks to raw garage salsa, we got the goods. !Chevere! Afro-filipino Latin Soul man Joe Bataan left Fania records before his contract was up and joined Ghetto Records with George Febo in 1970. Since Joe was still under contract to Jerry Masucci he was not able to record for Ghetto, though he did some producing. The label folded soon after. Currently popular Latin Jazz timbalero Bobby Matos appears here in one of his earliest recordings working with soul vocalist Tony Middleton. A note on the cover photo: in a logical progression from street corner malos our 3 Brooklyn `rumba kids' Charlie, Yogui, & Pote have graduated to the Big time: jammin' in Prospect Park, circa 1967! This snap-shot is a little bit o' history, because these kids were the first orchestra of Latinos/as to jam in a public park in Brooklyn. And their favorite summer soundtrack? A mix of Latin and black American music, la combinacion perfecta: jazz and R&B with mambo, guaracha, and son montuno. What you waiting for for, pana? Get busy with the sound system & let the cat out of the bag!
