This week my enlightenment continues as the guys drop something a little bit special on Warm Communications. Putting Down Roots is an unapologetic mixed bag of breaks, fills and stabs with a half time swagger that interplays with the more traditional jungle grooves. With a low end that bounces but stays well clear from the line of the kitschy mass produced jungle copy cats from the mid nineties, it hits the mark of a kind of `new sounding old' vibe without feeling overly engineered and forced. Think that I'm Yours on the flip is less intense on the breaks but brings the heavy low end that oscillates around dreamy pads and fx to create a misty air of lucidity. Every drum hit has clearly been expertly sliced and EQ'd to present itself in the way most apt to the rest of the track within which it sits. Not only is that incredibly labour intensive but the experience you have to demonstrate to be able to separate the micro from the macro of the music is something that is a testament to just good these tracks really are.
