Listening to Volcano! is a journey through highs and lows, a trip through confusion and clarity. Like their groundbreaking debut, Beautiful Seizure, the two songs on Apple Or A Gun cannot be pigeonholed, veering from delicate to possessed in the blink of an eye. With dramatic stylistic shifts and typically ambitious arrangements, the music is lucid but anarchic, never allowing a moments rest. Despite the apparent chaos, melody is never sacrificed. Comparisons have been drawn in the press to Radiohead, The Mars Volta, Jeff Buckley, Fugazi, Deerhoof, The Ex, Xiu Xiu, Animal Collective and even King Crimson, but none of these quite do justice to the band's explosive energy and pioneering spirit. Volcano! has an equally mind-blowing live show and just returned from a European tour which included a BBC session for Radio 1.
