Pensive, delicate, ornate and lush are all words used to describe the gentle music of James Wallace, a multi-instrumentalist from Melbourne Australia, who records and performs under the name Wintercoats. Sketches, Wintercoats' first formally released body of music, is a stunning collection of songs. Bells and chimes drip from corners, piano keys build from below, bass lines swell and string arrangements dance about. And on top of it all, James' haunting voice hazily rests. Wintercoats' music tells the story of a boy who filters the sometimes sharp experiences of modern living through the powder blue lens of compassion.
Wintercoats was one of the first artists Cascine approached, eager to have his soft touch on the catalog. This is a special release."
"'Windmill' starts off with gloomy, lo-fi hums until frontman James Wallace introduces his hazy, ethereal voice transforming the track into a lighter melody of glockenspiel pings, delicate percussions, and mystical violins."?-NYLON
"Wintercoats' music is both remarkably absent and refreshingly ingenuous."?-Coke Machine Glow
"We have Melbourne's James Wallace to thank for these softly woven string arrangements and idyllic vocal harmonies. It's dry, and it's saturated. It's cold, and it's solace. It makes me excited for fall."?-The Road Goes Ever On??
"Wallace layers the music in strings, glockenspiel, piano, and flute, but it's not heavy at all - the sound almost comes off as minimal when they're all actually applied. Wallace wraps his soft voice in reverb and sings humble, quiet melodies, sometimes sounding like the English-speaking version of Jonsi...he nails it completely." ?-In Your Speakers1) And When We Collide 2) Working On A Dream 3) Blood Prints 4) Forest Of Lovers ?5) Windmill 6) The Sea Change
