John Reed hails from Leipzig, Germany and is a multi-instrumentalist who, with his group the Automatics, explores breakbeats, funk, soul and, he says, "any type of deep groove." This latest outing on Funk Knight is another case in point: 'Knight Rost' starts with a broody groove and bold bass. Moody brass sounds and ominous drumming all build with organic percussive layers before a hypnotising lead breaks out to bring some psychedelic colour. 'The Glim' is a slower, more broken rhythm that has raw drumming and another charming melody eventually snaking its way out of the mix to bring a subtle funk.
